Come Fly With Me: Part 2

Welcome back! Better put on your sun glasses before reading this post. I have received the rest of my delightful Paula Nadelstern fabric yardage from Benartex, and it seems brighter than ever. Let us continue the story of our four-at-a-time flying geese. In Come Fly With Me: Part 1 we used a big square and two small squares to create sweetheart units. Now it is time to cut the rest of the small squares and draw a diagonal line down the center as in the previous blog post.

Pair the sweethearts with the newly marked squares.

Place the small squares on the sweetheart units as shown below. After sewing one quarter inch on either side of the diagonal line, cut on the diagonal line to create two Flying Geese units.

Chain piecing makes for some efficient and colorful work. Pictured is the “other” side of the sewing machine!

There are 364 Flying Geese units in this design, so it is important they are all as perfectly identical in size as possible. I like to trim my geese with the Creative Grids Flying Geese Tool to make this happen.

The trimmings are as beautiful and amazing as the Flying Geese!

There are unlimited ways you could put these Flying Geese units together! I chose to start with a 6 x 3 Geese rainbow and go from there. There are only a couple blocks in the quilt top that are identical, but there is method to my madness which you can see if you look closely at the finished top! Although, every time I look at the top I see some new pattern I hadn’t seen before.

Seeing the blocks go together is so much fun!

Sew the blocks together into 5 rows of 4 blocks each. Then sew the rows together to complete the quilt center.

Don’t forget to take a good look at the back of the quilt top before sandwiching and quilting. It is nearly as vibrant as the front!

And finally, the finished quilt top!

If you prefer a more orderly design, here is another version that looks appealing to me. I plan to explore this design some more and I hope you will, too.
