Snail Away Home

Where did a name like Snail Away Home come from? It stems from the two blocks that make up the quilt. I was asked by Benartex to shake up the traditional Snail’s Trail Block and do a remix. What I ended up with are the two blocks found in the quilt which are published in Benartex’s Fat Quarterly publication. I like the blocks so much that I decided to use them in my 3rd quarter Benartex Ambassador project. The earthy texture of the Benartextures fabric line I used really suit this design.

I was having a very hard time with what to name this project when out of the blue my husband said, “How about Snail Away Home?” It instantly struck a chord with me, and my husband is still reminding me that I finally used one of his silly quilt names.

This quilt could easily be used as a lively autumn wall hanging or as a table topper that will enhance your décor.

The quilt was pieced utilizing Foundation Paper Piecing, my favorite piecing technique. I love the accuracy of the points and was hooked the first time I tried it. Although I was very intimidated with FPP that first go round, now I can’t imagine making a quilt any other way.

Of course, what would a quilt be without the quilting? I rely on Beth Godderidge for the stitches of love that bring my designs to life. I love the way the curves in the quilting on Snail Away Home soften the angular lines in the design.

What colors would you use to bring this quilt to life? You could make it up for any season. You don’t need a rhyme or reason. Just enjoy the process.
