Kick the Can

I remember August being the last month to play outside before the fall school term started. Back then school didn’t start until the day after Labor Day. We didn’t care that it was hot. We couldn’t wait until dark to play our favorite game of Kick the Can. While we can’t relive those carefree childhood days, we can do the next best thing and reminisce. Though sometimes it is hard to remember ever being a child, especially with the world so different from when we were children. (Obviously I am talking from the perspective of a “certain” age.)

Our summers in Idaho are so hot and dry that we could be outside playing from dawn to dusk nearly every day. We didn’t have air conditioning so being outside didn’t seem as hot as it does now. I believe there was at least one summer that I never wore a pair of shoes. Seeing children outside playing in today’s world is so rare that it is remarkable. I am sure we would have been lured by A/C and technology if we had had them, but I am glad we didn’t. Think of what we would have lost. One of my favorite things to do was lay on the cool, delicious grass and watch the clouds go by during the day, or watch the stars twinkle at night. So much to wonder about.

Now my Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring days are happily spent creating in my sewing room. There is only one thing I like better than seeing one of my quilt designs come from my imagination to finished product. And that is seeing it through the eyes of another maker! I have had the pleasure of watching my design Color Tangles spring to life by one of my Instagram friends, Angelika. It is a beautiful and creative version and I adore it.

More of my creations are in process that I will share very soon! Here is a sneak peek of Cosmic Rainbow under construction. It uses beautiful fabric by Giucy Giuce for Andover. I am in the process of writing the pattern and hope to have it available in my shop in about a month.

I am also ever so anxious to share a photo of my quilt that will be published in the Jan/Feb issue of Quiltmaker Magazine! I am the worst at keeping secrets so this has been difficult for me. It will be on newsstands in November so not too much longer to wait.

Squeeze what joy you can out of the remaining days of summer!
